UTM examples by channel, ready to copy

Each block shows the finished link and the reasoning behind the source and medium choice. Replace the domain and campaign name and they are ready to use.

Newsletter

https://example.com/offer?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email
&utm_campaign=spring-sale-2026&utm_content=hero-cta

Source is the specific list, medium is email. Use utm_content to tell the header link from the footer link — that comparison is usually the most useful thing the campaign teaches you.

Paid social

https://example.com/offer?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=cpc
&utm_campaign=spring-sale-2026&utm_content=video-variant-a

cpc, not paid-social. The platform name belongs in source.

Organic social

https://example.com/blog/post?utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=social
&utm_campaign=content-march-2026

Same source as a paid LinkedIn placement, different medium. That is exactly how you separate paid from organic later.

Google Ads

Leave it untagged. Turn on auto-tagging.

The gclid carries campaign, ad group, keyword and match type. Manual UTMs on top give you less, not more.

Affiliate or partner

https://example.com/?utm_source=partner-name&utm_medium=affiliate
&utm_campaign=partner-program-2026

One distinct source per partner. Do not put them all under affiliate as the source or you lose the ability to tell who sent what.

QR code on print

https://example.com/menu?utm_source=flyer-march&utm_medium=offline
&utm_campaign=store-opening-2026

Keep the URL short — every character makes the QR code denser and harder to scan. Use a short destination path and few parameters.

Podcast or video mention

https://example.com/start?utm_source=show-name&utm_medium=podcast
&utm_campaign=sponsorship-q1-2026

Spoken URLs need to be typeable. Use a short landing page that redirects to the tagged URL rather than asking anyone to say "question mark u t m underscore source".

Email signature

https://example.com/?utm_source=email-signature&utm_medium=email
&utm_campaign=always-on

The rare case where a campaign name with no date is correct: it never ends.
